Rating Summary
Borderlands 4 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, and Strong Language. Also includes Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. This is a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of a Vault Hunter trying to save a planet from a villain. Players traverse the planet, interact with characters, complete quests, and battle human and fantastical enemies (e.g., rippers, pangolins, splices). Players use pistols, shotguns, machine guns, explosives, and knives to kill enemies in frenetic combat. Battles are highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. Some attacks result in enemies bursting into chunks of gore and/or losing limbs. Environments throughout the game contain corpses, large bloodstains, and severed limbs/body parts. Cutscenes depict further instances of violence and blood/gore: creatures exploding into large blood-splatter effects; a character snapping their own neck; characters stabbed or impaled. The dialogue references to sexual material (e.g., “…I'm gonna go home and have sex with my wife”; “Start a weird robot sex commune”; “New position! Heh. Like sex”; “Light as a feather, stiff as a wh*re”; “Have you seen my penis strap?”). One area in the game displays various sex toys (e.g., dildos, phallic-shaped objects). The word “f**k” appears in the game.
