Rating Summary
Gothic 1 Remake is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and Violence. This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of a prisoner that is incarcerated within a magically sealed mining colony. From a third-person perspective, players explore the medieval colony, complete quests, interact with characters, and engage in melee-style combat with inmates and fantastical creatures (e.g., harpies, fire-breathing lizards, orcs). Players use swords, bows, and magical attacks to kill enemies. Large blood-splatter effects occur during combat, often leaving stains on character's bodies and the ground. Some areas depict corpses amid entrails/viscera and large blood pools. Cutscenes depict additional instances of violence and gore: a character throwing a severed orc's head; a warrior ripped in half by an orc; a man impaled through the chest. The game contains some suggestive material: illustrations of a nude woman with partially obscured breasts; sexual/suggestive dialogue (e.g., “So the king trades women for ore”; “Fondle me balls”; "like a randy sailor trying to crack open a harbor brothel”). During the course of the game, players' character can obtain and smoke a fictional Swamp Weed drug which resembles a cannabis cigarette; repeated smoking of the drug can cause the screen to distort, with players' character collapsing to the ground. Players' character can also purchase and drink alcohol (e.g., beer, wine); overconsumption can also result in blurry-screen effects and players' character passing out. The word “f**k” is heard in the game.
