Rating Summary
FINAL FANTASY IX is rated T for Teen by the ESRB with Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Simulated Gambling. This is a role-playing game in which players follow characters trying to prevent a queen from destroying a fantasy planet. From ¾-overhead and third-person perspectives, players explore towns, interact with characters, complete quests, and engage in turn-based battles against human and fantastical creatures (e.g., imps, ghosts, goblins). Players take turns selecting attacking moves from a menu, viewing short sequences of characters executing moves—attacking with swords, axes, spears, and magic. Some environments depict corpses lying on the ground. One cutscene depicts a character smearing a drip of blood on his forehead. Some female characters and/or fantasy creatures are designed with revealing outfits (e.g., thong-like bottoms); during some attacks, the camera pans up characters' bodies, with closer angles. One menu option allows players to wager in-game currency on hands of blackjack. The words “fat-a*s” and “bastard” appear in the game.
