Rating Summary
Star Ocean: First Departure R is rated T for Teen by the ESRB with Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Alcohol. This is a role-playing game in which players control adventurers as they try to save a kingdom from a mysterious plague. From a ¾-overhead perspective, players explore towns and dungeon-like environments while battling monsters and human enemies. Players use swords, arrows, axes, and spears to attack enemies and bosses in in melee-style combat; fighting is highlighted by cries of pain, impact sounds, and screen-shaking effects. One cutscene depicts a character slashed by a sword and emitting a pool of green blood. A handful of female characters wear revealing outfits (e.g., low-cut tops, deep cleavage); the dialogue also contains suggestive material/innuendo (e.g., “Your chest is as flat as an ironing board”; “A race to see how many guys try to pick us up"; “You're going to tie me up again, aren't you?”). In several scenes, characters drink frothy mugs of beer, slur their speech, and discuss alcohol (e.g., “Yo, barkeep! Get me some booze!”). The word “bastard” appears in the game.
