The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, and Intense Violence. This is an action role-playing game based on the Lord of the Rings franchise. From a third-person perspective, players assume the role of three warriors (a man, elf, dwarf) on a quest to defeat evil forces in the fictional land of Middle Earth. Players use swords, axes, crossbows, and magic spells to kill fantasy creatures (e.g., orcs, goblins, and trolls) and human enemies in both ranged and melee-style combat. Battles are accompanied by slashing sounds, fiery explosions, and cries of pain from injured characters. Large blood-splatter effects occur frequently, and enemies may explode into bloody fragments when killed. Some attacks are also highlighted by slow-motion effects as creatures are beheaded, dismembered, or impaled.
