Rating Summary

This is a turn-based strategy game in which players assume control of 19th-century nations that must be led through industrialization, military conquests, and colonization. In order to expand their territory and defeat objective cities, players command ground troops and naval units in simulated battles. Though no actual soldiers are depicted, these conflicts are highlighted by realistic gunfire, explosion sounds, and cries of pain; casualty reports can be viewed after each battle. Players can also read historical documents that describe violent events (e.g., "[I]ncluding plunder, slave labor, rape, and mutilation," "An unidentified 'serial killer' killed five prostitutes in the Whitechapel area."). One article mentions a president who died from apoplexy "whilst engaged in sexual activities with his mistress." During the course of the game, players can also influence international economics; opium plants are sometimes included as trading goods.
