In this trivia-based adventure game, players assume the role of a slave trying to earn his freedom by becoming Rome's top gladiator. Players engage in brief gladiator battles that involve quick button presses or quick-drawing mini-games; damage is indicated by grunts, dust clouds, and depleting life meters. The game also contains a series of mini-games and trivia challenges: In one mini-game, cartoonlike animals lie in small pools of blood in the background; in another mini-game, players pour wine into jugs in order to assist a wine merchant. The game's trivia challenges and historical fact books reference murder, execution, suicide, and mutilation (e.g., "He poisoned his half-brother, beheaded his first wife . . . had his second wife . . . murdered and ordered his mother flogged to death," "They went to the bathroom and pushed the toilet sponge down their throat till the sharp stick killed them," and "They were cut into so many pieces the guards had trouble collecting the bits to bury them!"). There are also references to bodily functions (e.g., "Many let toilet waste drain into a deep pit. In time the pit filled with poo" and "They didn't have toilet paper; they used a sponge on the end of a stick which had to be shared with everyone!").
