Legacy of Ys Book I and II is a role-playing game (RPG) in which players control a tiny swordsman named Adol through several quests (e.g., saving trapped villagers, finding medicine, recovering lost books) across a colorful and whimsical 2D environment. From a top-down perspective (i.e., bird's eye view), players swat at various monsters with a sword. Monsters will often have red blotches or mist that appear when they are defeated. Text-based dialogue is frequent throughout the game and can include mildly provocative innuendo (e.g., " I used to show more skin…" and "You aren't into older women are you?") and expletives (e.g., "bastards," "damn," and "hell"). On the title screen and various menu screens, there is a depiction of two blue goddesses that appear partially nude. Strategic placements of hair and light effects partially cover their breast and pubic areas.
