Summer Intern, Privacy Certified

Part-time (20 hours per week); Hybrid/New York, New York

This internship position is for the Privacy Certified division of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). ESRB is the non-profit, self-regulatory body, for the video game industry. It independently assigns age and content ratings for video games, enforces an industry-adopted advertising code, and helps members of the Privacy Certified program implement and maintain lawful, responsible, and transparent online privacy practices. Using a variety of technological tools, Privacy Certified assesses the privacy practices of members’ websites, mobile apps, and other online services for compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other privacy laws and best practices.

Intern Duties

The intern’s primary duties may include the following:

  • Assist in performing compliance reviews of members’ products including PC-based and mobile-based websites, downloadable PC games and other digitally delivered products, and mobile apps;
  • Conduct issue remediation checks on compliance concerns;
  • Run and review network traffic scans across members’ products, as well as draft reports;
  • Research new tools and technologies for monitoring and reviewing products;
    and,
  • Other tasks as assigned.

The intern must be a self-starter, able to prioritize tasks, work remotely, and collaborate with a small team. Interns must be able to navigate Android apps released through the Google Play and Amazon storefronts as well as iOS apps released through Apple’s App Store. Applicants with demonstrated interest in data privacy and/or cybersecurity, including through classwork or other jobs or internships, are preferred. Students who have an interest in and some knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), blockchain technology, and NFTs are encouraged to apply. Relevant practical experience and/or familiarity with the video game industry is a plus, but not required.

This internship is paid and offers $17.50/hour as compensation. Ideally, we are looking for an intern to work a part-time schedule of about 20 hours per week. This schedule will be a hybrid office/work from home schedule. The intern will be expected to physically be in the office location during the initial training period. Wednesdays will also be mandatory in-person days. We may adjust the in-office requirements based on ESRB policies.
