Bastion

This is an action role-playing game in which players assume the role of a young adventurer who must help rebuild his shattered world. Players use a variety of weapons (e.g., hammers, swords, flamethrowers, dual pistols) to dispatch fantastical creatures such as ghosts, giant birds, and oversized plants; the sometimes frenetic battles are highlighted by sword-slashing sounds and colorful light effects. Enemies generally flash and disappear when defeated—some characters emit red puffs to indicate damage. As the game progresses, players can use alcohol-related items to boost various attributes (health, damage resistance, strength, critical hits, etc.); these sequences are often accompanied by comments from the omnipresent narrator: “One sip of these spirits and the kid will feel like a new man,” “I revive the kid with a shot of Werewhiskey,” and “A sip of Lunkhead Liqueur will toughen you up.” In one sequence, the central character briefly puffs from a smoking pipe (e.g., “Poor kid collapses after just one drag.”).
